He turns away for one minute to get his coat from the back room. Nick steps into the front hall to the sound of the door closing, a muffled curse on the wind. Maria stands behind Natalia, finger in her mouth but eyes hard. Phil looks down at his trading cards, clutching them tightly with small fingers; Clint looks up at Nick, Nerf bow dangling from one arm.

“Things didn’t work out?” Nick asks, bending down to their level. He frowns to himself and watches, sick feeling growing in his stomach as Maria takes a further step back and Natalia pushes Clint behind her. Nick smiles instead and Phil takes ahold of Maria’s hand, pulling it out of her mouth.

“It’s okay, you guys,” Nick reassures them. “I wasn’t looking forward to a night out or anything. I’m sure we can find another, better babysitter.” One who will last longer than five minutes. This is clearly the cue for the children, who quickly overwhelm him.

Maria clambers onto his back, chubby arms choking Nick slightly as he pulls Clint into one side and Phil against the other. Natasha leans against his bent knee in silence.

“She looked mean,” Maria says and the words whistle slightly from the baby tooth that fell out a few days ago. Nick sighs and hugs them tighter.

Luc is always my favorite.

Why isn’t there daddyFury with clingy babies fic yet? C’mon, li’l Maria would be the littlest mommy ever. She’d try to boss her daddy around because she’s the oldest girl and THAT means she has to be the woman in charge. Coulson is the kid who always does his chores but then the second you turn around he’s drooling over something with Captain America on it. Natasha is the dangerously sweet princess. You can’t turn her down, not when she turns on the charm, but when you’re on her bad side she’ll bite and kick and scream… Clint is a clingy little babboo who likes to climb bookshelves and shoot rubber bands.
